About Kind Leadership
Some years ago I was working with school leaders in Brazil at a time when they were still trying to achieve access to education for all and many schools had three sessions a day; for primary pupils in the morning, secondary in the afternoon and post-16 in the evening.
From the moment I arrived I kept hearing about “affectionate schools“ without understanding what they were.
Once I visited schools I realised this term referred to emotional intelligence and I was impressed that where ever I went, no matter how difficult the circumstances, I saw happy pupils and happy teachers and I knew that there must be a better way to lead schools. Brazil began its reforms by focussing on well-being rather than having well-being as an add-on or after-thought, and in that way they set the foundations for academic improvement. But, most of all, what is required to lead a successful team is emotional maturity and intelligence in its leader and the ability to communicate and engage people in a common vision.
